I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your despatch No.338 of the 24th.October last and to inform
you in reply to paragraph 2 thereof that the land was put up
to auction in accordance with the usual practice. Any bidder
might have offered more than the sum which Messrs. Butterfield
and Swire were prepared to give and might thereby have secured
the lease of the land. As a matter of fact no other bidder than
Messrs.Butterfield and Swire's representative was present at
the auction, and the land was sold to that firm at $20 above
the upset price.
